Hancock State Prison Near Sparta, Georgia
SPARTA, Ga. -- A corrections officer says inmates in a housing unit at Hancock State Prison were rioting Friday night.
Persons calling 11Alive News claiming to be inmates in the prison said there was a large scale gang fight in the prison. Several sources said guards had pulled out of the area for their own safety.
Corrections Department Spokesperson Kristen Stancil would only tell 11Alive News that there was a fight involving several inmates and the situation was being evaluated. She said she could not comment on reports the inmates had control of some parts of the prison. Gwendolyn Hogan spoke to our sister station in Macon, WMAZ and told them the fight was contained to one housing unit at the prison.
Several people who called 11Alive News said they had talked to family members who were inmates inside the prison who said there had been several stabbings in the fight.
No injuries could be confirmed by the corrections department at last check.
This marks the second large-scale disturbance at a Georgia State Prison facility in the past week. A disagreement over illegal cell phones sparked a fight at Telfair State Prison in Helena, Ga. last Monday. That fight sent three inmates to nearby hospitals.
