Weird things people tried to take through airport security

  • A flare gun with seven flares was confiscated from a passenger's carry-on luggage in Norfolk just before Christmas.
  • In October, inert landmines were found in a passenger's checked baggage at Salt Lake City International Airport.
  • Last July, a passenger was arrested at Yuma International Airport in Arizona when a TSA agent found a half-ounce of C4 explosive inside a tobacco can the passenger had in his checked luggage.
  • Five inert grenades were found at Newark Liberty Interntational Airport in early December.
  • Looks like Batman was traveling through San Antonio just before Christmas. This Batarang-shaped knife was confiscated from a passenger's carry-on luggage.
  • A pair of throwing knives was found inside a hollowed out book carried by a passenger flying out of Reagan National Airport in Washington. The chapter of the book that was hollowed out? It was called 'Ninja Equipment'
  • A 'tactical spike' is a martial arts weapon that was taken from a passenger at Pensacola after he went through the TSA body scanner. The passenger had it concealed in his sock.
  • Included among the more than 1,200 firearms found at TSA checkpoints in 2011, a loaded .380 pistol (not the one shown here) was found strapped to the ankle of a 76-year-old man flying out of Detroit in December. The man said he forgot it was there.
  • A stun gun disguised as a cellphone was confiscated from a passenger flying out of Los Angeles in late November.
  • A college science project in a student's carry-on bag shut down traffic at Omaha's airport in August. According to the TSA blog, the wires running to his project housed in a mint tin looked like an improvised explosive devise (IED) when viewed on an x-ray monitor.
  • A passenger in Miami was flying with seven small snakes and three small turtles in his pants. The animals were stored in ladies hosiery, which allowed them to be balled up in the passenger's pockets. Needless to say, the passenger was arrested on smuggling charges.

The restrictions placed on air passengers regarding what they can and cannot carry on board an airplane are certainly in place for everyone's safety.
