Dayton, OH (Sports Network) - Matt Kavanaugh led the way with 23 points and
nine rebounds as the Dayton Flyers defeated the La Salle Explorers 79-75 in a
a hard fought Atlantic 10 Conference bout at University of Dayton Arena.
Luke Fabrizius chipped in 14 points for Dayton (13-5, 3-1 A-10), as it won its
fifth game in six outings. Kevin Dillard dished out a game-high seven assists.
Earl Pettis led the Explorers (13-5, 2-1) with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting
from the floor. Ramon Galloway scored 18 points, Sam Mills had 17, and Tyreek
Duren chipped in 13 on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. The loss snapped a six-
game losing streak for La Salle.
Dayton ended the half on a 12-2 run to take a 40-29 advantage into the
intermission. The Flyers shot 62.5 percent from the field and connected on 5-
of-8 attempts from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes. La Salle shot
40.7 percent from the floor and went 4-of-10 from three-point range in the
first half.
The Explorers fought to keep their winning streak alive after the intermission
by shooting 61.9 percent from the field and by making 16-of-21 from the
charity stripe in the second half. Although the Flyers shot just 35.7 percent
from the floor, they attempted seven more shots and five more free throws in
the final 20 minutes. Galloway hit a big three-pointer with 1:40 remaining
that made Dayton's lead 78-75. After the D.J. Peterson stole the ball from
Dillard, Mills missed a potential game-tying three-point attempt with nine
seconds left and Josh Parker added a free throw onto the Flyers' lead just
before the final buzzer sounded.
Dayton held a 35-27 advantage in the rebounding battle.
