GWINNETT | Amputee reaches top of Kilimanjaro

(WXIA-TV) -- A Gwinnett County man with a condition known as congenital amputation reached the top of one of the world's "seven summits" Sunday, a blog dedicated to his trek reported.

Kyle Maynard, 25, reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak in Africa. The summit of Kilimanjaro is 19,340 feet above sea level. It's the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.

While summiting the peak is considered an impressive feat for anybody, his achievement is even more impressive because he did it with arms that end above the elbows and legs that end near the knees.

Team "Mission Kilimanjaro" left Atlanta on January 3. A blog posted dated January 15 announced that the team had reached the summit. "Reach your highest potential," the post said.

In previous reporting, Maynard told 11Alive news that he hoped his quest to successfully climb Kilimanjaro would inspire veterans and children with disabilities, showing them that no challenge is to great to be conquered.
