(WXIA) - Could there be long-thought-extinct wooly mammoths living in Siberia?
According to a video posted online by the UK's Sun newspaper this week, this may be true.
The video shows a large animal, with what appears to be reddish hair, a trunk and some sort of tusks, crossing a river in Siberia. The color of the hair in the video appears to match samples of mammoth remains found in Siberian areas where scientists say the prehistoric mammal lived.
Some critics say the video, in all actuality, shows a bear with a fish hanging from its mouth.
According to the Sun, the video was shot by a Russian government engineer last summer while surveying the area for planned road construction.
Rumors of living mammoths have circulated among conspiracy theorists and paranormal enthusiasts for years. This video just may give them more ammunition for their arguments.
The last surviving mammoths were thought to have died out more than 3,500 years ago. The mammoth is a large mammal, related to modern day elephants. They were said to have lived in colder climates and were covered with long hair and equipped with large tusks.
