An early spring means an early strawberry crop, with blueberries and blackberries not far behind.
Southern Belle Farm in McDonough is one of several area farms that allow visitors to gather the fruit themselves.
"You can pick strawberries when they become ripe instead of getting them from the grocery store when they're green," said Jake Carter. His family started the farm more than 60 years ago.
They also cost less: $10 dollars per gallon if you bring your own container. The same amount would be $15 or $20 in a grocery store and the berries sometimes come from as far away as California.
It will take some gas and some time to visit a pick your own farm, but many like, Southern Belle, offer entertainment and educational tours. Many families have made berry picking a springtime tradition.
Southern Belle Farm is located at 1658 Turner Church Rd, McDonough, Georgia 30252. Call 770-288-2582 to find hours and crop availability.
