Video: Police statement of 12 year old shot

Crime scene tape is stretched across a street near a shooting scene in DeKalb Co. Thursday.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A 12-year-old boy was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite in serious condition late Thursday morning after what police said was an accidental gunshot wound.  DeKalb police said he was with two other teens skipping school and planning to burglarize homes in the area.  They are still not sure who fired the shot that hit the boy.

Earlier police said the boy may have shot himself.  It happened in the woods between the Dover Station Apartments and Montclair Elementary School on Clairmont Place. The incident did not occur on school property, and the victim was not a student at the school.

The two other teens were detained in connection with the shooting. Police said they were not looking for any other suspects. Investigators said they found a weapon near where the boy was shot.

Initially, the boy told police he was shot by an unknown black male, but now police say he may have shot himself in the upper leg.

Montclair Elementary School was briefly placed on lockdown during the police investigation. No other injuries were reported.
