AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Aimee Copeland has spoken her first words since developing the flesh eating bacterial disease that has claimed her hands, leg and remaining foot.

"Today...May 27...is AIMEE DAY!!!," her father Andy Copeland blogged on Facebook. He told 11Alive News that the milestone was an important step in Aimee's recovery.

It's been a big week of firsts for Aimee.

Just a few days earlier, she sat up for the first time in a chair.

Nurses have moved the entire ventilation system out of her room, and her family thinks she will be out of the intensive care unit within weeks.

Aimee's father says Aimee is looking forward to getting prosthetic limbs and wants to help other amputees.
