ATLANTA -- Former Delta Air Lines CEO David Garrett Jr. died June 2 at age 89 in his Georgia home.
Company officials said they did not know the cause of death.
Garrett became the airline's fourth CEO in 1978. He stepped down as CEO in 1987, but he continued to serve on its board until 1994.
He started his career as a ticket sales agent. Over the next four decades, Garrett helped oversee Delta's growth into the country's fourth-largest airline.
Former Delta CEO Jerry Grinstein called Garrett the "very embodiment of Delta."
