AUSTELL, Ga. -- Cobb County emergency workers responded to an apartment fire Wednesday morning and found two children left alone.

It happened just after 8 a.m. Whisper Trail in Austell.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call and found heavy smoke engulfing an apartment.  They heard someone crying inside the apartment and found two children.

They were taken to Wellstar Cobb Hospital for smoke inhalation and were released a short time later into the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services.

According to a release, investigators say 39-year-old Mercedes Guadalupe Behena left for work, leaving her two children at home alone and asleep.

She added she had been cooking prior to leaving and accidentally left her stove turned on.

Cobb County detectives arrested Behena and charged  with 2 counts of Child Deprivation and 2 counts of Reckless Conduct.
