Never mind running with one buddy, jogging with hundreds of buddies is far superior! Saturday morning, a team from 11Alive participated in the annual DASH4DAD. The 5K run/1 mile walk raised awareness about prostate cancer and helped to raise critical funds for research and free testing.
It was an early morning wake-up after a night of working late, but it was a brilliant way to start the weekend. My talented colleague Jerry Carnes, himself a prostate cancer survivor, spearheaded our team's effort. I was there to support Jerry and to run in memory of my grandfather who passed away from prostate cancer when I was 10 years old.
This weekend is also bittersweet for me. I lost my dad two years ago and while he's never far from my mind, this weekend, cherished memories have been much more vivid.
So, it was terrific to see how the annual DASH4DAD also created an opportunity for Atlantans to develop those wonderful memories. I watched several local dads running/walking the streets of Sandy Springs with their children. One of my colleagues, Lionel, brought his dad along for the event.
What could be better than spending quality time with loved ones, starting the weekend focused on fitness and being dedicated to spreading awareness about a critical health issue? I can't think of a nicer way to spend a Saturday morning!
Wishing you warm memories this Father's Day! -Melissa Long
