I took a break from cardio training. With time dwindling before the 10k, I understand my time is limited, but I'm trying to give my lower legs a break since I'm battling shin splints. The pain isn't too intense; it's just a dull ache in the front of my lower legs. So, this morning I went to the gym to lift weights and get in some basic strength training. Not only is it important for general well-being and energy but good for building stronger muscles for running and in order to prevent injuries. Squats have been my friend and I've also been trying to work my core. Trying being the key word! From what I've been reading, strong abs are crucial for runners since they provide stability and endurance.
Tomorrow, I'm back to my routine and will be jog with a friend in the morning. Hopefully, I won't be too tired after my jog in the park and can hit the gym for 30 minutes of weight lifting before starting my day.
