MACON, Ga. -- A Bibb County judge is refusing to lower Stephen McDaniel's bond.

Judge Phil Brown ruled Tuesday that McDaniel must post the original bond amount of $850,000 to get out of jail before his trial.

McDaniel is charged with the June 2011 slaying and dismemberment of Agnes Scott and Mercer University law school graduate Lauren Giddings. He is fighting a murder charge and possible death penalty.

Defense lawyers told the judge there's no way McDaniel's family, who lives in Lilburn, can afford the current bond.

Prosecutors argued against a reduction and tried to get the judge to delay the hearing.

McDaniel was a law school classmate and neighbor of Giddings. Her dismembered torso was found in a garbage bin beside their Macon apartment building.
