ATLANTA -- A former Atlanta city employee has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing more than $1 million worth of equipment and reportedly pawning it to get money for drugs.

Jonathan MacDonald pleaded guilty to the charges against him. After his two years in prison, he will serve eight years of probation.

MacDonald was also sentenced to pay $35,000 in restitution to the city.

According to an investigation into MacDonald's criminal activity, the former watershed department employee stole at least 35 solar panels, 24 metal grates, metal recyclers and more from the city. He pawned the items so he would have enough money to support his drug habit, according to a report produced after the investigation.

The city of Atlanta is now deciding whether it will file a civil suit against MacDonald to recoup the rest of the money lost.
