DUNWOODY, Ga. -- Dunwoody Police have arrested a 51-year-old man suspected of stealing patio furniture from a local restaurant.
Darryl Bernard Dillard was taken into custody Wednesday. He is being held in the DeKalb County Jail on one count of felony theft by taking, according to Dunwoody Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Carlson.
Carlson said Dillard is accused of taking four sets of patio furniture from O'Brian's Tavern on Mount Vernon Road last Friday. A man believed to be Dillard was captured on surveillance video taking the tables and chairs from the restaurant's outdoor eating area.
Other restaurants that lost some of their patio furniture include Alison's Restaurant on Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Carvel Ice Cream Shop on Jett Ferry Road and Taki Japanese Steakhouse on Ashford Dunwoody Road, Carlson said. Police have not commented on whether they believe Dillard is responsible for those crimes as well.
Alison Norris, who owns Alison's restaurant in the Shops of Dunwoody, said 12 metal patio chairs were stolen from her outdoor patio.
"I never dreamed I'd have to worry in Dunwoody," she said. "I mean, I've lived here 22 years, and who would think you'd have to chain down your patio furniture in a strip mall that is heavily used?"
Norris said she won't take any more chances. "We pull all the patio
furniture together and we chain it all up," she said. "It adds 20
minutes to our close out every night. It's really inconvenient."
Sgt. Carlson said investigators believe the suspect could be re-selling the furniture or selling it as scrap metal.
