WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- A Cherokee County Sheriff's deputy who killed a teenager during a standoff has been cleared of all criminal charges.

Deputy Jason Yarbrough was cleared Monday. He had been on administrative leave since shooting 16-year-old Andrew Messina on May 1.

Messina, a sophomore at Etowah High School, held his mother hostage and threatened to set fire to their Woodstock home. He was pronounced dead at WellStar Kennestone Hospital after being shot by Yarbrough.

Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison said Yarbrough will return to work this week.
