ATLANTA -- Fulton County Police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a 5-year-old girl in southwest Atlanta Tuesday evening.
The girl, Ja'Leah Rose Felix, was crossing Campbellton Road with a group of children, including her older cousin, to get to the Sandtown Park playground across the busy street at around 5 p.m.
Police said Ja'Leah dropped her shoe while crossing the road. When she ran back into the road to retrieve it, she was hit by a dark-colored truck. Ja'Leah's family described it as a Ford four-door extended cab pickup truck.
The driver did not stop and has not come forward, police said.
Ja'Leah and her father, who lives in College Park, were visiting Ja'Leah's aunt Tuesday, according to family members. Ja'Leah's mother is stationed in Colorado with the U.S. Army and is flying to Atlanta to be with the family.
Police originally reported Ja'Leah's age as 5, but the medical examiner said she was 8 years old. Family members confirmed that Ja'Leah was 5 years old.
Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester told 11Alive News they hope to put out a photo of the type of vehicle involved once they have interviewed all of the potential witnesses and have shown them photos of various SUV's and pickups.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Fulton County Police at 404-730-7911.
