ATLANTA -- A recent graduate of Georgia State University died early Wednesday morning after crashing his car into a downtown Atlanta Häagen-Dazs shop.

Witnesses told Atlanta Police that the man, later identified as 21-year-old GSU soccer player Timothy Nixon, was driving very fast down Peachtree Street when he lost control of his car at a curve just before 2 a.m.

Nixon's car jumped the curb and hit two planters and a trash can before crashing into the store, according to Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones. Police do not know what caused Nixon to swerve off the road, test results will have to determine whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved.

Several of Nixon's college teammates went to the scene to try to find answers for themselves Wednesday afternoon.  They said it was tough to stand where their friend died, and will miss his humor.

"We're always going to remember him, he was one of the crackups on the team, someone everyone loved to be around," said soccer teammate Caleb Kernan. "I was looking through my contacts today and my text messages and he was there, it still hasn't kicked in yet-- when it does, it's going to be hard to bear."

Nixon was trapped inside his car and had to be cut out. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No one else was injured in the wreck.
