Viacom networks could go dark on DirecTV at midnight

ATLANTA -- DirecTV subscribers may lose out on their Daily Show or Colbert fix as of midnight Tuesday. Comedy Central is among 17 Viacom networks that could go dark for customers of the satellite provider if a dispute between the two companies is not resolved.

Earlier this month, DirecTV's primary competitor, satellite provider Dish Network lost access to AMC, IFC and WE TV in a similar business dispute.

At issue are fees paid by DirecTV and other distributors for channels from companies like Viacom or AMC parent Cablevision.

Late Monday, Viacom officials said negotiations had reached an impasse, according to the New York Times. Viacom issued a statement urging customers to demand that they keep their channels on the air.

Both sides in the dispute have placed videos on the internet, Viacom's spoofing the recent DirecTV television spots, while DirecTV's features company CEO Mike White.

The channels affected include Palladia, Centric, Tr3s, CMT, Logo, NickToons, VH1 Classic, TeenNick, Nick Jr., Nick@Nite, Spike, BET, VH1, TV Land, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV.
