NEW YORK -- Investigators have determined there were no explosives on the Delta plane that returned to Kennedy Airport after a passenger found a cut wire in the lavatory Thursday night, sources familiar with the situation said.

A wire threaded through a drinking straw was discovered on the plane lavatory floor of Delta Flight 126, which took off for Madrid from Kennedy Airport with 206 passengers at about 8:10 p.m., according to officials.

The passenger who found the wire alerted crew members and an air marshal on board, the source said. The plane returned to New York as a precaution and landed at Kennedy Airport at about 9:45 p.m.

The FBI and a bomb squad searched the plane and determined the wire was non-incendiary, the source said. They did not find any further evidence of any explosives on board the plane.

The wire did not belong to any plane part, the source said.

There is no evidence of criminality, but authorities are continuing to investigate as a precaution.

The passengers were taken off the plane as investigators searched the aircraft. They boarded a new flight to Madrid early Friday.
