ATLANTA -- Delta Air Lines says apparent sewing needles were found in sandwiches served in business class on flights from Amsterdam to three U.S. cities Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reports.

A passenger on a flight to Minneapolis was injured but refused treatment when the plane landed.

Needles were also found on two flights to Atlanta and one to Seattle.

Delta stopped loading sandwiches into business class after learning of the tainted food, which was supplied by Gate Gourmet in Amsterdam. The company is cooperating in the investigation.

In a statement Monday, Atlanta-based Delta said the airline "is taking this matter extremely seriously and is cooperating with local and federal authorities who are investigating."

Police at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport said Tuesday they don't know how the needles got into the sandwiches, but are investigating the matter as a crime.

Airport Police spokesman Robert van Kapel said Dutch detectives are working on the case together with the airline and U.S. law enforcement authorities. Officials said there is no indication the incident is linked to terrorism.
