SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - The Mexican company that operates the Cancun airport has won a concession to run the main international airport in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan.
Aerostar Airport Holdings says it will enter into a 40-year lease agreement with the Puerto Rico Ports Authority to run the Luis Munoz Marin international airport. The company said it will make an upfront payment of $615 million to the Port Authority. Puerto Rico's governor's office announced the deal Thursday and said the island would receive nearly $2.6 billion in total.
About 100 flights per day come in and out of the main San Juan airport. The Puerto Rican government has said it has been struggling to increase passenger traffic and make terminal repairs.
Aerostar operates nine airports in Mexico.
