PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -- Sheriff Gary Gulledge didn't mince words when talking about the search for a robber who targeted a elderly female resident.

"The suspect is, for lack of a better word, a piece of crap who needs to come forward. Folks in this county don't take kindly to people who rough up and rob the elderly," Gulledge said.

11Alive News sat down with 88-year-old Mary Jackson as she recounted what happened to her last Thursday.  She has a bandage on her right arm where she was injured and there are bruises on her other arm and both legs.

"He knocked on the front door then as I got there, he went around to the back door.  He said his car had broken down and he wanted to use the phone.  I said I wasn't letting him in and he'd have to give me the number to call," said Jackson.

At that point Jackson says the man held up his cellphone and she knew something wasn't right.

"I looked at him in his eyes and he looked like he was up to something," Jackson said.

Moments later the suspect jerked open the back screen door, breaking the hitch latch and pushed Jackson to the kitchen floor.  He ransacked her home, eventually taking a jewelry box from her bedroom and the contents of her purse.

Because she lives alone, Mary always wears a necklace with an  emergency panic button on it.  The robber ripped it off her neck and threw it across the room on his way out.

Amazingly, Jackson doesn't seem mad, only concerned that the culprit "is on the wrong track in life".

"I want that rascal to get out and work for what he wants instead of trying to take what someone else has worked hard for all their years. He's not headed down a good path," said Jackson.

Sheriff Gulledge is less charitable saying he wants to find the robber and have the courts punish him to the full extent of the law.

"I think its beyond repulsive that anyone would go out and take advantage of an 88 years old woman.  She has nothing, there's nothing you can take from her other than her security," said Gulledge.

Yet, as Jackson sits in her home just days after the robbery she insists that she's not afraid. She refuses to be.

"I'm not going to go to bed and think somebody might break in on me.  I just ask the lord to take care of me and so far he has," said Jackson.
