ATLANTA -- Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed continues his push toward the proposed transportation tax by encouraging voters to cast their ballots in support of T-SPLOST next week.

The proposal in 12 Georgia regions would hike sales tax by 1 cent to fund road and transit projects. It is an issue being watched nationally because Georgia is a red state where tax hikes have been deemed unpopular.

An 11Alive poll last week showed support is lagging for T-SPLOST.

The mayor has been campaigning hard all across metro Atlanta the last week. He is barnstorming in the old political way.

Tuesday afternoon, he appeared with former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes in Cobb County.

Hours later, he dropped into the W Atlanta Downtown to speak with a group of young professionals sponsored by Atlantic Station. Mayor Reed also took part in a question and answer session on Google+, a social media site.

The Mayor told 11Alive's Jeff Hullinger he will do all he can to support the proposed transportation tax. In the days ahead, his schedule will be largely dedicated to campaigning and making speeches on behalf of T-SPLOST.

Wednesday, he will meet with environmental groups that support the measure.

Thursday, Mayor Reed will appear on an 11Alive television program explaining the issues. He will also debate those leaders who are opposed to the tax.

There will be a rally at Centennial Olympic Park between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday to support the issue.

Governor Nathan Deal also supports the proposal.

Voters go to the polls on July 31.
