LONDON -- Swimmer Ryan Lochte brought home the first gold medal for the U.S. in the 2012 London Olympics Saturday.

Lochte placed first in the men's 400m individual medley with a time of 4:05.18.
His teammate and competitor Michael Phelps, meanwhile, didn't even make the podium; he placed fourth with a time of 4:09.28.
Thiago Pereira of Brazil took the silver medal with a time of 4:08.86, while Kosuke Hagino won bronze with 4:08.94.
After the race, Phelps sent a tweet congratulating Lochte on his win: "Congrats to @ryanlochte ... Way to keep that title in the country where it belongs!"
Lochte responded with "Thanks @MichaelPhelps I couldn't do it with out you. #USA"
