UPDATE: Spalding County police arrested Rakheem Jerome Byrd in a traffic stop Thursday night. He was driving the Hampton assault victim's stolen Toyota. Sgt. Michael Gaddis says Byrd was recently released from prison, and will be transferred to Clayton County Friday.
Lovejoy, Ga. -- A woman is speaking from her hospital bed as she recovers from a savage beating in Lovejoy. The mother of two, who asked not to be identified, said she doesn't want the same man to attack other women.
"I would never have seen this coming," the woman said. "He was a gentleman, a really nice guy."
She said he charmed her into giving him her phone number at a gas station. A few days later he showed up to ask her out on a date, and she refused. She says he told her he would leave, but asked to use the restroom first. Once inside the home, she says he choked her until she passed out. When she woke up later, he began brutally beating her with a coffee table leg and a frying pan. He told her he was going to kill her, and had assaulted women before.
The Lovejoy police believe him.
"It seemed the more pain she was in the more pleasure the suspect got," said Sgt. Mike Gaddis. "This is a very calculated thing, and I think he's done this in the past."
The mother of two said she prayed and thought of her children as she was being beaten. She said the man even tried to burn her by cooking grits and pouring them on her.
"I kept thinking about my kids, I couldn't stop thinking about my kids," the woman said. "I've got to be here for my kids, I'm all they have."
The man called himself "Raheem," and is described as being 6'1, 220-240 pounds, bald, and in his late 20s. He stole the victim's 2005 blue Carolla, tag AGI7082, and may be driving it.
