ATLANTA -- U.S. Army Sgt. Thomas Jefferson Barksdale of Macon was 21 years old when he was fighting for his country and lost his life in battle, in Korea.
That was in late 1950, 62 years ago.
He was missing in action and, officially, presumed dead until this year when the Army positively identified remains found in 2000 -- remains found on that former battlefield in North Korea -- as those of Sgt. Barksdale.
According to the Department of Defense, 83,000 Americans, from World War II through the 1991 Gulf War are still listed as missing in action, "unaccounted for." Like Sgt. Barksdale, 7,900 of them served in the Korean War.
