Broomall, PA (Sports Network) - Approximately 900 people, including NFL
commissioner Roger Goodell, turned out Tuesday for the funeral service of
Garrett Reid, the oldest son of Eagles coach Andy Reid.
Garrett Reid died Sunday morning at the age of 29. He was found dead in a dorm
room at Lehigh University, site of the Eagles training camp.
The funeral service took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints in Broomall. Among those in attendance were former Eagles players
Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook and Jeremiah Trotter.
"Our heart goes out to the family," said current Browns president Mike
Holmgren, who hired Reid as a coach during their time together in Green Bay.
"I'm happy I could be here for him. I didn't talk to him for a long time. We
shared some very intimate thoughts. Our prayers are with he and the family."
Garrett Reid battled drug addiction for several years, but many of those
attending the funeral focused on his kind heart.
"Garrett was a friend of everybody," said Baltimore Ravens coach John
Harbaugh, an Eagles assistant coach from 1999-2007. "The kids in school that
were kind of struggling a little bit, he was their friend. The guys that were
picked last for the basketball team, he was their friend. He would take
everybody under his wing. He had great compassion for people and that's a
trait I think he gets from Andy."
The Eagles open their preseason schedule Thursday at home against Pittsburgh.
Andy Reid plans to be on the sideline for the game.
"The team loves this man, Andy," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said. "It's hard
to explain, but as a coach and as a human he's fully evolved. He's one of
these people that shares his life and his love, and his passion for the
football team and the extended family. It's so appreciated by everybody that
works for him."
