NEW HAVEN, CT -- One of the freshmen to enter Yale this year had quite a journey to get to the Ivy League school.

Gabe Acheson walked all the way from Baltimore.

Acheson left Baltimore on July 29 and walked 400 miles after committing to it in his admissions essay, "Walking to Yale," according to the Baltimore Sun.

"I wanted to force myself to do it in case I got in. I didn't think I was going to get in, but I got in and I knew if I put it in the essay my parents would have to let me do it and I would have to force myself to do it," he said on Friday.

Two hundred and seventy of the miles he traveled were on the Appalachian Trail, which he said was better than dodging cars on the streets.

The Hartford Courant reports that Acheson slept outside, had two close calls with rattlesnakes in Pennsylvania and tolerated blisters during the trip.

But Acheson said the journey helped prepare him for college.

"It clears your mind. It's a reset button. A lot of people are using the trail as a reset button and so, for me that's kind of what I'm doing, too," Acheson said.

Acheson arrived on Thursday, the day before orientation, and plans to study music.
