GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Georgia's newest state park -- a 1,040-acre site in Hall County off northeastern Lake Lanier -- is set to open in summer 2013, reports The Gainesville Times.

The park, named Don Carter State Park, will feature 48 camp sites with water and electricity, eight two-bedroom cottages, visitors center, playgrounds, two boat ramps and a beach/bathhouse in a scenic cove off the Chattahoochee River.

The park is named in honor of Gainesville real estate executive Don Carter, who served on the Georgia Department of Natural Resources board for 29 years, and who recommended the property to state officials years ago as a possible site for Hall County's first state park.
