The Roswell Police department is one of several metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies with a vast property room full of items that were once evidence and are now abandoned.
There are bicycle, golf clubs, tools and assorted other items. "We get a lot of computers, a lot of electronics, jewelry," said Evidence Specialist Lori Stedman.
What happens to all these items if the rightful owners never come forward? It used to be that police departments held annual auctions, but now many of them leave the auctioning to Propertyroom.com, a California based company that holds online auctions for hundreds of police departments across the country.
It's similar to eBay but users are required to register a credit card in advance.
While some consumers may balk at buying evidence from a crime, Stedman says the auctions raise money for the police department and keep more officers on the street. "It eliminates having to use any personnel to set up for an auction, and maintain an auction," she said.
She added none of the items sold on propertyroom.com have been evidence in any type of violent crime.
