ATLANTA -- After working through the weekend, MARTA said Monday their Breeze payment machines are still not able to take debit or credit payments. They won't be fixed when commuters go back to work Tuesday.

It's a glitch that started on Friday and looks to continue into the work week, because MARTA officials said they don't know the cause of the problem.

"We really want to apologize for the inconvenience that our customers have experienced," said Ryland McClendon of MARTA External Affairs. "We will identify what happened and then identify a timeline for getting that corrected."

This is the third time the machines have had a similar glitch this year. This latest problem came during a weekend when thousands were visiting Atlanta for conventions and sports events. But McClendon said they are not currently looking at working with a different payment vendor.

"We are one of the few smart card vender fare systems in the nation; so there are not a lot of other venders out there," McClendon said. "But if there is a vender out there, and we can't reconcile our differences, that will have to be considered."

McClendon said one of the possible causes for the problem could be a system upgrade that protects customers' bank information. They are not yet sure if the current outage and the earlier ones this year are connected.
