GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- The body of missing UGA student Quinton Ayers was discovered in his pickup truck off Highway 316 near Harbins Road on Monday evening.
According to Gwinnett County Police, Ayers appears to have died as a result of a single vehicle accident. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
Officials say the vehicle was "well off the roadway and may have been there for several days."
Ayers was last seen on Friday morning around 1 a.m. leaving a friend's house. Hours before she was notified of her sons death, Ayers mother said she was scared something happened to her son. "I want to have hope but not hearing from him for this long, you know, this is out of place for him," Sheridan Ayers said. "That's the part that really scares me."
Cpl. Jack Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department said the vehicle, a black GMC pickup, was found 40 feet from the roadway. The truck was "resting on its side and appeared to have hit a tree at a significant speed."
A tractor trailer driver called 911 after he spotted the truck's undercarriage from the roadway.
Authorities do not have any information on speed or what caused the accident. Police will be investigating the wreck for the next couple of days.
