CONYERS, Ga. -- A state trooper has been placed on routine administrative leave after shooting a suspect in Rockdale County Thursday morning.
The shooting happened at around 11:20 a.m. behind the QuikTrip at 2400 Salem Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
A GSP spokesperson said the trooper tried to pull over a car for following too closely, but the car tried to get away.
The trooper managed to block the car in behind the gas station, but the suspect jumped out of the car and tried to run while pointing a gun at the trooper, the GSP said.
The trooper shot the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Cardal Dwayne Haywood of Covington, in the thigh. Haywood was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Public Safety are now investigating the shooting.
