According to the Washington Post, a player for the Iranian team, Adel Kolahkaj, picked up the explosive, and perhaps thinking it was a stray beanbag, casually tossed it behind the sideboards. The device exploded moments after he tossed it, tearing a hole in the sideboards and frightening everyone nearby.
The blast briefly stopped play, and, according to the Post, didn't stop the match from ending in a scoreless tie.
