ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Georgia voted in favor of health benefits for employees with domestic partners on Thursday.

The proposal uses no tax or tuition money but rather funds from fundraising efforts.

Dr. Janet Frick, Associate Professor of the Life-Span Developmental Psychology Program agrees with the notion that domestic partner benefits should be offered.

"About 75 percent of [rival schools] are already offering full domestic partner benefits," Frick said. "So it really places us at a disadvantage in terms of retention and recruitment of top faculty and administrators if were not able to offer these."

Administrators expect to have a plan in place relating to this matter by the end of this academic year.
