Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Monday that center Andrew Bynum will sit out 3 weeks as a precaution due to lingering knee issues.

The diagnosis, a bone bruise of the medial femoral chondyle of his right knee, according to the Daily News, caused Bynum to undergo a radical yet non- surgical procedure, called Orthokine, early last month in Germany.

Though it is not yet approved in the United States, Kobe Bryant, Grant Hill and Alex Rodriguez have all tried it previously. It seeks to produce a high concentration of platelet cells which are believed to speed up the healing process.

With the Los Angeles Lakers last season, Bynum appeared in 60 games and averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds over a career-best 35.2 minutes per contest.

The Sixers are scheduled to begin their exhibition slate 10 days from now at Orlando, and kick off their 2012-13 regular season by hosting Denver on Oct. 31.
