Video: Raw video: Fire displaces DeKalb apartment residents

A fire has displaced several residents at an apartment complex on Bouldercrest Road.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A 7-year-old is being blamed for a fire that raced through a DeKalb apartment building Tuesday.

DeKalb Fire officials said the boy was playing with a lighter at the complex on the 1400 block of Bouldercrest Road, near Gresham Park.   The flame caught a couch on fire and it spread from there.

Paramedics transported six people to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation.  Other residents stood in the parking lot with just the clothes on their back watching the two story apartent building burn.

The Red Cross said 10 units were damaged. Representatives of that agency are helping residents who were displaced.

It happens to be National Fire Prevention Week.

Authorities say the boy will not be charged, but he will be required to attend a firesetting prevention program. As for whether his parents will be charged, investigators think not since there were no signs of neglect at the time the fire started.
