CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- A 48-year-old man was hit and killed by a train in Cartersville Thursday.

Cartersville Police spokesman Capt. Mark Camp said John Ceresoli Jr. was hit shortly before 10 p.m. on the train tracks beside the City Cellar restaurant on Museum Drive.

Witnesses told investigators that Ceresoli was eating at the restaurant and kept getting up, walking to the tracks and looking both ways before returning to his table.

The last time Ceresoli got up, he stood in the middle of the tracks as a train approached, Camp said.

Ceresoli then turned and took a step toward the restaurant, but was unable to get off the tracks in time to avoid being hit by the train.

Camp said Ceresoli was pronounced dead at the scene.
