Deep-pocketed Georgians giving to both campaigns

(ATLANTA  BUSINESS CHRONICLE) -- Republican Mitt Romney's solid lead in polls conducted in Georgia over President Barack Obama is reflected in campaign contributions from residents of the Peach State to the two candidates.

According to Federal Election Commission data, Romney's campaign has brought in nearly $6.5 million from Georgians to just more than $5.5 million donated by the state's Obama supporters.

Each candidate has his share of deep-pocketed financial backers from the worlds of business, politics, sports and entertainment.

Among the Georgians who contributed the legal limit of $5,000 to Romney were Tom Bell, chairman of Mesa Capital Partners; John Brock, CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: CCE); Kelly Loeffler, co-owner of the Atlanta Dream and vice president of investor relations for IntercontinentalExchange Inc. (NYSE: ICE); Bernie Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD); and David Ratcliffe, retired CEO of Southern Co. (NYSE: SO).

Obama supporters from Georgia giving the limit included Herman Russell, founder and chairman of H.J. Russell & Co.; Sylvia Russell, president of AT&T Georgia; and former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes. Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons and co-founder of Home Depot, and Atlanta actor, director and producer Tyler Perry gave $2,500 each the president's campaign.
