ATLANTA -- Crime Stoppers has increased their reward to $5000 for information on a homicide that occurred early Saturday morning.
Two children were shot while sleeping in their bed early Saturday morning, leaving a 2-year-old girl dead and her 1-year-old brother in critical but stable condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite hospital.
Atlanta Police said two to three gunshots came through the front door of the Southwest Atlanta house from outside, and they have no witnesses or motive for the shooting.
"I'm thinking whoever did it was a coward; she was nothing but 2 years old," said Charlie Howard, the uncle of the two kids. "If they had a problem with us they could have just come and told us, they didn't have to shoot through the door."
Howard was sleeping in the basement when he heard the shots and rushed upstairs. He joined his family in the front room of the house where his nephew was bleeding and his niece was unresponsive.
"She loved to play, to come out here and ride the bicycle up and down the street," Howard said of 2-year-old Tyteanna. He said he was fighting back tears. "I'm trying to hold it in instead of crying, because crying isn't going to bring my little niece back. But it will come."
Howard said the kids were sleeping with their grandmother in a sofa bed behind the front door of the house. The shots were fired around 1:30 a.m. Howard said the family had only lived in the home for a month and had no problems with anyone that would prompt a shooting at their house. The family is joining with police to ask the public for help with information. And with every car that drives by their home, Howard finds himself feeling suspicious.
"I'm thinking about whether that's the person who did it," he said. "I'm looking."
