ATLANTA -- Fake Instagram accounts for Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and JetBlue have been set up with the promise of free flights, warns CNET.
The accounts, @americanairlines_giveaways, @united_giveaways, @jetbluegiveaways, and @delta_giveaways, all work very similarly, the tech website says. Each promises a free airline ticket or round-trip ticket to the first several thousand followers. The number of followers varies depending on the account.
As of Sunday, the fake account using the Delta name already had 21,000 followers after it promised a free trip for the first 20,000 people who followed and shared the account.
It's unclear why the accounts have been set up and what the people behind them hope to achieve, CNET reports.
The website said it has contacted Instagram and is working to get answers.
JetBlue has tweeted on its official Twitter account that it does not have an official Instagram account and that any promotion seen there is not supported by the airline.
