A new study from Hotwire.com says 78 percent of Thanksgiving travelers haven't booked their trips yet. Smart travelers can still save money by employing four strategies:
Planes are predicted to be an average of 90 percent full during the Thanksgiving weekend. Try flying on Thanksgiving Day and the day after that for better selection and pricing. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is expected to be the busiest.
The Wall Street Journal reports Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the best days to book a lower priced flight, although internet booking has made that trend a little less reliable thana decade ago.
Best Fares.com also has a link to a coupon code for $25 off flights to several cities in Florida on Southwest Airlines. The advertisement indicates the discount is a gift you must send to another email recipient, such as a friend or family member. Blackout dates include November 21st through the 26th, December 21 through 24th, and December 26th through January first.
If you have a lot of bags to check you may save money shipping them via U.S. Mail or United Parcel Service, especially if they weigh more than 55 pounds.
AirfareWatchdog.com has a chart indicating how much each airline will charge for checked bags.
