DALLAS, Ga. -- Karen Pace has never met Mitch Comer, the 18-year old allegedly confined to a dark room by his parents and barely fed for years. But she says his story of neglect and abuse has touched her in a way she can't ignore.

That's why Pace has organized a community fundraiser for Comer to help him get his life back on track.  She's calling the money raised, The Mitch OverComer Fund.

Since Comer is 18 he is not eligible for state and federal aid programs that would normally help children get shelter and pay for therapy. But because Comer claims he has spent the past four years, isolated from the world he doesn't have the life skills or education necessary to get a job or live on his own.

The event will be Saturday, November 10th, at Taylor Farm Park in Powder Springs. It will run from 10am - 4pm.

More than 40 businesses have donated items to be sold or auctioned to raise money for the teen. Pace says there will also be games for children, entertainment and plenty of food.

"His needs are long term. This is not just in a month, two months, he's going to walk away and it will all be behind him. He needs long term assistance," said Pace.

Pace says more than anything he wants to go back to school to get his high school diploma. Given his age, it will likely have to be a private school, which would cost Comer thousands of dollars he doesn't possess.

Janice Harrelson with Bumble Bee Bakery is donating cookies to be sold at the event. She didn't even hesitate to help when asked.

"I think with anything in this county people will pull together to help. That's just what we do out here, help one another," said Harrelson.

Kerri Crank is grateful someone stepped forward to organize such an event. She lives on Vivid Lane, the same street as the Comer family.

"It still gets you, still pulls your heart strings every time you go by that house," Crank said.
