Video: Business leaders hit the streets to fight homelessness

Business leaders spend the night outside to raise money and awareness for Covenant House, a shelter for homeless youth.

ATLANTA -- With nighttime temperatures dipping into the low 40s, November is certainly not the best time for a campout.

But in Northwest Atlanta, more than three dozen of the city's business leaders rolled out blankets, sleeping bags and cardboard boxes, preparing to brave the cold.

After all, hundreds of children have to do it every night.

"They estimate that between 350 and 700 kids are on the street every night," said Clark Dean, senior director of Studley, Inc. and organizer of Thursday night's event.

"Think about an entire high school of kids that have no place to call home, that are out on the streets."

The group is sleeping out to raise money and awareness for Covenant House, a shelter for Atlanta's homeless youth. Bankers, entrepreneurs and other professionals spread the word about their mission and solicited friends to give money. By midnight, their donations exceeded $70,000.

The evening included a basketball game with the kids in Covenant House, a tour of the home and a candlelight vigil. The "Sleep Out" will conclude with a 5:30 a.m. breakfast.
