(WXIA) -- There are conflicting messages from the Middle East over a so-called "calm period" which would craft a cease fire of sorts in the region.

The report, on CNN, points out that a cessation of at least 24 hours is something Israel says is needed before they will sit down to negotiate a more lasting truce between the sides.

CNN says a formal announcement of the "calm period" is expected at any time, but that has not been confirmed.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is en route to the region to try to negotiate peace between the two sides.
