MACON, Ga. -- A new state law allows package liquor stores to open on Thanksgiving and Christmas for the first time.
The Macon Telegraph reports that due to successful lobbying from the Georgia Alcohol Dealers Association, the state Department of Revenue revised regulations in February and for the first time package stores can open on the two holidays.
André Cates, the owner of Andre's Liquor Shoppe on Presidential Parkway in Macon, told the newspaper he has always enjoyed having Thanksgiving off, but plans to work for the first time in his 30 years of working in package stores.
"I'm going to give it a shot," he said. "I certainly could use the sales."
Opening is optional, so it's best to call ahead to make sure specific stores are open.
