CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - Police in Cartersville said they have recovered a 12-year-old girl who they said had run away from Louisiana. They said they had also arrested a 22-year-old Michigan man in connection with the case.

In a release, Cartersville Police Chief Thomas Culpepper said the man, Brett Robert Burke and the girl had known each other through the internet. Culpepper said Burke traveled to Louisiana on Saturday and either late that night or early Sunday brought the girl to Cartersville, where he was staying with friends.

"We are extremely pleased that this young girl was located as quickly as she was," Culpepper said. "The longer a person is missing, the less likely it is that law enforcement will locate the individual. Our officers did a great job in resolving this situation."

Burke has been charged with aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation and interference with child custody. Additional charges may be filed, Culpepper said, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Cartersville police are transferring custody of Burke to the Bartow County jail.
