COVINGTON, Ga. -- Covington detectives are investigating an alleged drug-related home invasion and shooting that happened on Wednesday morning.
According to Covington police, a 911 call came in around 10:30 a.m. on a shooting on Monticello Street. When officers arrived just after 10:30, they found a white BMW trying to leave the residence.
An officer turned on his lights and siren, and tried to stop the BMW, but it fled. The officer pursued the vehicle onto Highway 36, travelling south.
Next, the BMW turned south on the Covington Bypass, and eventually onto Highway 81. The BMW reentered the Covington city limits, and attempted to turn left onto Turner Lake Road. Unable to make the turn, the driver crashed into a power pole. The pole, at the intersection of Washington Street and Turner Lake Road broke in half on impact.
When the BMW stopped, the driver and passenger got out, both armed with handguns. They ran towards the railroad tracks along Turner Lake Road. Officers ran after them, chasing them into the path of other Covington officers who came to help.
The suspects gave up to police.
Investigations revealed that the suspects had shot a 28-year-old man and stole his vehicle. It is believed that this was during a drug-related home invasion.
The suspects have been named as Terrence T. Sheppard of Decatur and Alton Andrew Young, Junior, of Atlanta, both 21. They each face charges of aggravated assault and armed robbery.
The victim was taken to an Atlanta-area hospital and was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
From the crash site, investigators found two shotguns and a significant amount of what they believe is marijuana. Covington detectives are investigating for further details.
