A Taste of Moonshine At Dawnsonville Distillery

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. - "Corn liquor!" said Dwight Bearden.

"We're running a Brandy right now."

Bearden was making Moonshine here in Dawsonville before he was even old enough to drink.

"I've been around stills since I was probably six or seven years old," said Bearden.

Four generations of Moonshining.

"We're boiling the alcohol off of the mash," said Bearden.

With a simple recipe strong enough to put a consumer on its back.

"The object is to keep the temperature below 212 degrees to where you're just boiling the alcohol and not the water," said Bearden.

It's safe to say the man has seen and done it all in the liquor industry.

"Everything from distilling to washing," he said. "Cleaning the floors."

But for the first time in Georgia's history, folks are now allowed to taste samples at the all new Dawnsonville Moonshine Distillery.

"You going to learn a little bit and then you are going to taste it before you leave," said owner, Cheryl Wood.

Wood runs the place that sits just steps away from city hall.

"We make your Moonshine right here in Dawnsonville," she said.

"We had no laws concerning distilleries here in the state of Georgia," said James Grogan, mayor of Dawnsonville.

That's until the passing of recent legislation.

But make no mistake about it the city's mayor says the tasting of the corn whiskey stops here.

"No, that's not it," said Mayor Grogan. "We don't do the tastings at city hall. All of it is done here in the distillery."

Visitors must be 21 and show their ID before getting a shot of whiskey.
